Your task: Read lines 6-20 and pick out the most interesting word or phrase. Type your answer on the next slide. You have 5 minutes.

11

Analysing Language

  1. Pick out an interesting word or phrase. Be selective - choosing a good quote makes it easier to write about.

  2. Identify the language technique or word class.

  3. Write about what the language shows you. What does it make you think or feel? What does it suggest? You don't need to explain what the words mean.

  4. Make sure you link to the topic of the question.

12

Example answer:

The writer uses personification in the quote, “tortured elms”. This suggests that they are twisted and suffering. The adjective “tortured” implies that they feel severe pain creating the idea that the setting is harsh or eerie.

Now have a go at writing a paragraph of your own using the quotes we discussed.
You have 5 minutes.

20

Question 4 - What to include

  • You need to comment on both the language and structure of the text.

  • Aim for three paragraphs: beginning, middle and end.

  • Each paragraph should talk about the structure - what the focus is on, how it changes, the tone and atmosphere.

  • Each paragraph should also comment on the language - Find an interesting quote to prove what the focus, tone or atmosphere is and analyse the language used in it.

  • Identify the language/ structural techniques used.

21

Question 4 - Example answer

At the beginning of the text, the focus is on the two characters who are feeling nervous and there is an uneasy atmosphere. They write, "The house is solid and dignified." The use of the adjective "solid" suggests that the house is both large and strong. The personification "dignified" implies that the house commands respect or that it has a high social ranking. This description of the house makes it seem imposing and intimidating which adds to the uneasy atmosphere.

26

Question 5 - Example answer

The places in both texts show signs that they have not been looked after. For example, in text one the drive is "narrow and unkept," so it has not been maintained. In text two, the window is described here: "as if unwashed for decades." suggesting that this part of the house has been neglected.

Question 6 - Example paragraph

The writer of text 1 remembers a dream that seems scary and intimidating. The simile, "gnarled roots looked like skeleton claws" shows that the setting that they are remembering is untidy, overgrown and intimidating. The adjective “gnarled” suggests the roots are twisted and aged, creating a sense of decay and neglect. The comparison to “skeleton claws” has connotations of death and horror and shows that the writer remembers it as a menacing place.

On the other hand, in text 2 the writer remembers a real event rather than a dream, and the setting is much more pleasant. For example, the alliteration "mellow morning light" creates a soft, warm, serene atmosphere showing that this place is fondly remembered.

Your task: Write a comparison of your own. You have 10 minutes because you need to write about both texts.
