Earth has four major "spheres" or systems.

They are the:

What are the Earth's spheres?

  • Biosphere

  • Hydrosphere

  • Lithosphere

  • Atmosphere

4

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is NOT one of the four Earth spheres?

1

Biosphere

2

Atmosphere

3

Technosphere

4

Lithosphere

Rotate your books so that your page is horizontal. We are going to make a mind map about the spheres.

Spheres Mind Map

6

Atmosphere

  • Layer of gases around Earth

  • Mostly made up of nitrogen and oxygen

  • Includes weather, clouds, and the air we breathe

  • Reaches from the Earth's surface to about 10,000km high

7

Hydrosphere

  • All of Earth's water, including oceans, lakes, rivers, ice, groundwater, snow, etc. Clouds are also a part of the hydrosphere

  • Covers about 71% of the Earth's surface

  • Solid, liquid, and gas

8

Biosphere

  • All living things, i.e. animals, plants, bacteria, and fungi

9

Lithosphere

  • The solid outer part of Earth: rocks, soil, and crust

You don't need to write this part but note that it does note include all the solid parts of Earth - like down to the core. Think skin of an apple versus the whole apple.

Global Event Activity

At each event station, read the clues carefully and figure out what happened. Then, analyse how the event affected each of the four spheres.

In your books, for each station, complete:

  • What do you think the event is?

  • Describe the impact on each sphere.

  • How do the spheres interact?
