On June 9, 2025, Nintendo officially released its newest video game console: the Switch 2. This marks the first major hardware launch by the company in eight years. The release was met with global anticipation, especially from long-time fans of the original Nintendo Switch, which sold an incredible 152 million units around the world. Gamers had been eagerly awaiting news of the sequel, as rumours and small leaks had appeared online for more than a year. Nintendo remained silent about the project until just two months before the launch, when it finally revealed the design and key features in a global livestream watched by over 10 million people. The excitement only grew from there.

The Switch 2 offers flexible gaming options that fit different lifestyles. It can be used as a portable handheld device, allowing players to game while commuting, travelling, or just relaxing on the sofa. But it can also function as a home console by placing it into a dock connected to a television or external monitor. This hybrid feature made the first Switch a hit, and Nintendo has refined it for the new version. The device comes with two upgraded controllers, a high-speed USB-C charger, a new power adaptor, and special wrist straps for active games. The screen is also slightly larger, with improved resolution for sharper visuals and smoother gameplay.
22
Along with the console itself, Nintendo has bundled 25 games to appeal to a wide audience. These include puzzle games, RPGs, sports titles, and a graphically enhanced version of Mario Kart World, which now includes online multiplayer and customizable tracks. The system's performance has also improved, allowing smoother loading times and better battery life. Nintendo has projected that it will sell around 15 million units by the end of the current fiscal year, which concludes in March 2026. Analysts believe this is a conservative estimate, as demand appears even higher than expected in some regions, especially Japan and North America.
23
Demand for the Switch 2 has been intense. Across the globe, fans queued for hours, and in some cases overnight, just for a chance to purchase the new system. In Japan, the excitement reached such a level that Nintendo decided to use a nationwide lottery system to fairly distribute the consoles. Over 2.2 million people applied for a chance to buy the console on launch day. In Tokyo, prize winners gathered as early as 4:30 a.m. outside major electronics stores. The atmosphere was electric, with people cheering, taking selfies, and even livestreaming their spot in line. For many, getting the console felt like winning the jackpot.
24
One lucky fan, 39-year-old Koji Takahashi, was thrilled to have won the chance to buy a Switch 2. “It’s amazing,” he said. “The new system allows players to see each other during multiplayer matches, which really brings people together.” For others, like Satoshi Ayame, the story was different. Although he didn’t win the lottery, he was so determined to experience the launch that he took a half-day off work and visited the release event anyway. “I couldn’t buy one, but I still wanted to feel part of it,” he said. “Everyone here is excited — it’s like a festival.” Fans like Satoshi show just how powerful Nintendo's brand still is.
25
The Switch 2 is priced at $449.99, which some critics say is expensive, especially for younger gamers or families. However, many fans argue that it offers excellent value, given its power, build quality, and the number of games included. Early reviews highlight the system’s interactivity, praising its user-friendly interface and the new features that allow real-time communication between players. The console also supports augmented reality games and motion-based controls, making it a fun and social experience. Nintendo hopes this release will continue the success of the Switch brand and keep them competitive in a rapidly evolving gaming industry.
