Asking Name
はじめまして、
〇〇です。おなまえは?
Hajimemashite, ..... desu.
O namae wa?
はじめまして、〇〇です。
よろしく おねがいします
Hajimemashite, ..... desu.
Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
🧩 Let's explain:
💠「おなまえは?」ー o namae wa? = “What is your name?”
1️⃣ The function of「お "o"」in「おなまえ "o namae"」
👉「お "o"」 is a polite prefix.
👉 It makes the word more respectful or polite when talking about or to someone else.
2️⃣ The function of「は "wa"」in「おなまえは?」
👉「は "wa"」 is a topic marker particle in Japanese.
👉 It marks the topic of the sentence — what you’re talking about.
💬 So, in 「おなまえは? "o namae wa?"」, You're saying:
“As for your name…?” → meaning: "What is your name?"
👉 It's a shortened version of:
「おなまえは なん ですか?」ー O namae wa nan desu ka?
What is your name?
ノート:【〇〇です ー .... desu】= “I am 〇〇”
Replace 〇〇 with your name
4
Asking Origin
どこから きましたか?
Doko kara kimashita ka?
Where are you from?
〇〇から きました。
〇〇さんは?
..... kara kimashita.
.....-san wa?
🗣️ Example:
Q: どこから きましたか? ー Doko kara kimashita ka?
Where are you from?
A: ペンシルベニアから きました。たろうさんは?
Penshirubenia kara kimashita. Tarou-san wa?
I came from Pennsylvania. How about you, Tarou?
ノート:【〇〇から きました ー .... kimashita】= “I'm from 〇〇”
Replace 〇〇 with your country, state, or city of origin
✨ Let’s focus on:
「から "kara"」+「きました "kimashita"」
1️⃣ から"kara" = “from”
It tells where you came from.
You put the place before「から "kara"」
🧠 Think of:
[Place] + から "kara" = from [place]
👉 アメリカから ー Amerika kara = from America 🇺🇸
👉 にほんから ー Nihon kara = from Japan 🇯🇵
Verb: きました ー kimashita = “to came”
〇〇から きました ー .... kara kimashita
"I came from ...."
5

〇〇から きました
.....kara kimashita
Can you name the countries in English from the Japanese labels above? 🌍
✍️ Now create a full sentence in Japanese saying the country of your origin.
6
Asking Nationality
〇〇じん ですか?
....jin desu ka?
Are you a ......?
はい、
わたしは 〇〇じん です
Hai, watashi wa ....jin desu
Yes, I'm a ......
🗣️ Example:
Q: アメリカじん ですか? ー Amerika-jin desu ka?
Are you an American?
A: はい、わたしは アメリカじん です。
Hai, watashi wa Amerika-jin desu.
Yes, I am an American.
ノート:【〇〇じん ー ....-jin】= “A person from 〇〇” / "an ......"
Replace 〇〇 with a country.
✨ Let’s focus on:
「country」+「じん "jin"」
1️⃣ じん "jin" = “person, people”
The suffix じん "jin" is added after the name of the country to indicate one's nationality (example: American, Japanese, etc.)
2️⃣ If you want to describe your specific ethnic descent and nationality, you can use this grammar pattern:
〇〇けい 〇〇じん "....kei ....jin" .
👉 Example:
わたしは インドけい アメリカじん です
Watashi wa Indo-kei Amerika-jin desu.
I am an Indian-American.
