ESSAY WRITING
INTRODUCTION

1. Establish a nuanced context — not just general background
Rather than merely restating the topic, show awareness of debates, assumptions, or tensions within it.
Weak:
Nowadays, people move to cities for jobs.
Expert:
The increasing necessity for geographic mobility in competitive labor markets has redefined traditional notions of stability, often challenging long-standing familial and community ties.
Introduction

2. Use sophisticated but precise language
Language should be formal, but never inflated or vague. Aim for lexical elegance, not showiness.
Examples of expert-level phrasing:
This trend, though economically rational, presents profound psychosocial implications...
Despite its pragmatic appeal, such relocation may exact a hidden emotional toll.
While the labor market rewards flexibility, the erosion of social continuity is often underestimated.

3. Introduce the central tension or contradiction
Experts rarely see issues as black-and-white. Introduce a tension that creates space for your argument.
Example:
While relocation may offer upward mobility and exposure to dynamic labor markets, it simultaneously risks alienating individuals from critical support systems embedded in familial and social networks.

4. Position your thesis within that tension
Don’t just state your opinion — locate it within the complexity of the issue.
Instead of:
I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Use:
This essay contends that, although relocation offers tangible professional advantages, the psychological and relational consequences are sufficiently significant to challenge the assumption that this trend is wholly beneficial.

5. Avoid formulaic structures
Advanced writers do not say: “This essay will discuss…”. Instead, they naturally signal structure without stating it.
Example:
Through examining both the socio-economic benefits and the interpersonal sacrifices involved, this essay argues that the costs of such transitions merit greater consideration than they typically receive.

Element | Description | Example |
|---|
Nuanced context | Introduce the issue with depth and relevance | In a global economy driven by labor flexibility, permanent relocation for employment has become normalized... |
Lexical precision | Use formal, specific language | psychosocial cost, socioeconomic mobility, relational dislocation |
Central tension | Introduce the complexity | economic progress vs. emotional fragmentation |
Positioned thesis | Argue from within the nuance, not outside it | While advantageous, this trend is not without hidden costs that often go unacknowledged. |
Implied structure | Guide the reader subtly | Through exploring both dimensions... |
