Unknown artist. (1588). The Armada Portrait [Painting]. Wikimedia Commons. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armada_Portrait_Elizabeth_I_Queens_House.jpg

To what extent does the Armada Portrait relate to the context of production?

How can you approach this type of questions?

7

Step 1: Understand what the question is asking

- “To what extent” means you must give a judgment (not just describe).
- Identify the time period involved.  When was the Armada Portrait produced?

.
.Step 2: Think about the historical context.

- What were the most important economic, political, social and religious developments during that period of time? Identify them and remember that selection of information is important. .
.

Step 3: Analyze the source carefully

Look carefully at the source (painting) and decide what it shows, and what it doesn’t.

Does the painting reflect these developments? Does the painting depict important events?

What elements in the source (painting) illustrate this? how?
