The First Step: Understand the Question
There are two main variations:
A Balanced Discussion
An Opinion-Led Discussion
3
The Two Question Types
Type 1: Balanced Discussion
Prompt says: "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of..."
Your Goal: Give equal time and detail to both the pros and the cons.
Your Opinion: Not required. You are an impartial analyst.
Type 2: Opinion-Led Discussion
Prompt says: "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?"
Your Goal: Argue that one side is stronger or more significant than the other.
Your Opinion: Essential! You must state and support your position.
4
Type 1: Balanced Discussion
Example 1 (Work): "Many people now work from home instead of in an office. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this trend." Your task is to explain the pros (e.g., flexibility) and the cons (e.g., isolation) in a balanced way.
Example 2 (Education): "In some countries, students are expected to study a foreign language from a young age. What are the benefits and drawbacks of this policy?" Your task is to describe the positives (e.g., cognitive benefits) and the negatives (e.g., pressure on children) with equal detail.

The Bulletproof 4-Paragraph Structure
This simple structure guarantees a clear, logical essay every time.
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Paragraph 2: Body A (e.g., Advantages)
Paragraph 3: Body B (e.g., Disadvantages)
Paragraph 4: Conclusion
8
Deconstructing the Introduction
Paraphrase the Question: Rewrite the topic from the prompt using your own words (synonyms and different sentence structures).
Write a Thesis Statement: This sentence tells the examiner what the essay will do.
For "Discuss": "This essay will discuss both the benefits and the drawbacks of..."
For "Outweigh": "This essay will argue that the advantages of... are more significant than the disadvantages."
9
Building Strong Body Paragraphs (P.E.E.)
P - Point: Start with a clear topic sentence that states the main idea (the advantage or disadvantage).
"One of the primary benefits of online shopping is its convenience."
E - Explain: Explain why or how. Give more detail about your point.
"This is because consumers can browse and purchase goods from their homes at any time..."
E - Example: Give a specific, real-world example to make your point credible.
"For instance, a busy professional can order their weekly groceries via a mobile app..."
10
Writing a Clean Conclusion
Summarize Key Points: Briefly restate the main advantage from Body A and the main disadvantage from Body B in one sentence.
Restate Your Thesis: Reaffirm your overall position or the essay's finding.
***Crucial Rule: Never introduce new ideas or examples in the conclusion.
11
Brainstorming Ideas Quickly
Mind Map: Topic in the center, with branches for "Pros" and "Cons."
T-Chart: A quick two-column list.
The Stakeholder Method: How does the topic affect...
Individuals? (health, money, time)
Society? (community, culture)
The Economy? (jobs, businesses)
The Environment?
