Definition

• The main idea is the most important point or message that the writer wants to convey.

• In a narrative, the main idea often reflects what happens and why it matters.

Main Ideas

Main Idea vs. Supporting Details

• Main Idea: Big picture, central message (e.g., "Friendship can overcome fear")

• Supporting Details: Specific actions, dialogue, or descriptions that support the main idea.

​Key points about Main Idea:

• It is a central idea, central point, or main point

• Main idea of a story is the central concept that the author wants to portray through the narrative, characters and settings. It is not detail or specific.

• The main idea in stories is almost always implied and not explicit. Implied means that it is not directly expressed, but portrayed through a character's actions, settings, and plot.

​Clues to Find the Main Idea in a Narrative

• Look at the title — it often hints at the main focus.

• Check the beginning and ending — main ideas are often introduced early or reinforced at the end.

• Identify the main characters and their goals/problems — the main idea usually revolves around them.

• Look for repeated ideas or events — if something keeps coming back, it’s probably central.
