What is data?

Two main types of data.

  • Qualitative = descriptive.

  • Quantitative = numbers.

Why data matter?
“Data is information we collect to learn about the world.” It is our observations about the world around us. For example, Lets take a survey of favorite ice cream flavors.

Quantitative Data is primarily data that can be represents by a quantity or a number. What was the most popular ice cream in class?
How do you know?


Qualitative Data represents opinions or feeling and cannot be represented by using numbers. "Why is your ice cream choice your favorite?"

The difference between Quantitative and Qualitative data is how it can be measured. Can it be represented by numbers or not.
