Lit Terms

  • Characterization - the way an author presents characters

    • direct or explicit: character described by author or narrator

    • indirect or implicit: character's traits revealed by thoughts, actions, dialogue or appearance

  • Connotation - emotional response suggested by a word

  • Dynamic Character - a character that changes throughout the story

  • Static Character - a character who stays the same throughout the story

  • Euphemism - a mild word or expression substituting for a harsh or blunt word or phrase (ex. saying someone passed instead of someone died)

  • Symbol - any person, animal, place, object or event that exists on a literal level within a work but also represents something on a figurative level

    • example: a dove symbolizing peace

  • Theme - main idea or message of a story, poem, novel, or play often expressed as a general statement about life

  • Tone - expresses the author's attitude towards their subject

  • Satire - a piece of literature designed to ridicule the subject of the work

  • Allegory - a story in which characters, events and places stand for ideas, qualities or other events

    • they are made to teach a moral lesson

  • Fable - a brief tale designed to illustrate a moral lesson

    • often characters are animals
