Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for phenomena.
Students have previously identified the macro-level functions of the skin, bone, muscle, blood, and nerves, and they have figured out that the
microscopic structures (cells) in blood and nerves support the functions of those parts of the body.
In this lesson, students analyze and interpret observational data from their investigations of skin, bone, and muscle samples to provide evidence that the microscopic structures found within these tissues
support the tissue’s functions.
Unit GOAL
2
A middle school student injured his foot and could not walk. Over the next 4 months, the foot healed and the student could walk again.
"Storyline" and our steps to success
>We share our experiences moving our bodies and times when we were unable to.
>We read doctor’s notes and see images of an injury.
>We create a timeline of important events that show evidence of healing.
>We develop models to show how the parts of the foot work together so the patient can walk again.
>We brainstorm related phenomena of other times we have seen healing in humans and other living things.
3
Key terms
function -- actions by the body's structures or body systems
structure-- relationship between parts of the body.
normal* -- natural state. usually refers to tests
muscle -- type of tissue (long cells) produces movement.
ligament --- connective tissue. Can connect bones and/or support joints.
orthorpedic-- medical field that works in the muculoskeletal system.
rehabilitation- help to regain movement.

5
Use radiation to show dense structures.
** CAT scans are 3D versions of Xrays!
X ray
Use magnetic and radio waves to find and detect different types to structures.
MRI
6
Multiple Select
Which structures of the body can you identify using x-rays and MRIs?
Bones
Muscles
Skin
All of the above
7
Multiple Choice
Which of the following machines is used to take images of the inside of the body using strong magnets and radio waves?
X-ray machine

What body parts?
What can we identify specifically?
How many structures/relationships can we see?

Identify the following points:
1) shoulder Red Dot/Line
2) neck Blue Dot/Line
3) clavical Yellow Dot/Line
4) fracture Green Dot/Line

The waves MRIs "shoot" into the body and create a "bounce" back image or difference that makes an image. How MUCH of a "bounce" back or "pull" is what we can see.
Different types of matter create various kinds of grey on the MRI image.
MRI's and what they show:

MRIs are taken from multiple perspectives:
Horizontally <---> is called
a transverse scan
Vertically, ^v is called
a sagittal scan

is a living being that consists of only one single cell, which performs all essential life functions like nutrition, excretion, reproduction, and movement
Unicellular Organisms
Organism::
the material structure of an individual life form
Uni VS. Multi
a living thing that is made up of more than one cell and whose cells work together to perform specific functions, forming tissues, organs, and body systems.
Multicellular Organisms

In OpenSci our "Middle School student" has injured their foot and it takes 4/3 weeks to heal we are learning the process the body/body systems/the tissue/the cells are doing to recover from that injury.
We are going from the "macro-" to the "micro-"
