​11+ Writing Exam Prep – CSSE Style
A couple of weeks to go!


Please make sure you have your pencil and paper ready for our warm ups

​🎯 Today we will:

• Revise the skills needed for top-band writing

• Practise under timed conditions

• Build confidence for exam day

​What Makes Top-Band Writing?

✅ Clear structure (beginning, middle, end)
✅ Engaging vocabulary
✅ Figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification)
✅ Varied sentence types
✅ Punctuation variety & accuracy
✅ Paragraphs & connectives
✅ Accurate spelling
✅ Appropriate voice & tone

Write 3 sentences describing this picture
👉 Use 5 senses if you can.

​Warm-Up 2: Sentence Variety

Start with:
“The boy ran down the road.”
Rewrite it in at least 3 different ways:

• Make it suspenseful

• Make it complex

• Make it descriptive

​Warm-Up 3: Character Voice

Write 2 lines of speech that show a worried character.
❌ Don’t write: “he said worriedly.”
✅ Show it through tone, words, or broken sentences.

​Exam Practice Task

🕒 30 minutes total

Choose ONE:

1. Narrative/Descriptive
   Write a story that begins: “The wind howled louder than I had ever heard before …”

2. Discursive
   Some people think children should not be allowed mobile phones. What is your opinion? Write an article giving your view.

​– How to Use Your Time

• ⏱ 5 mins: Plan (bullet points / quick notes)

• ⏱ 20 mins: Write (aim for 1–1½ pages)

• ⏱ 5 mins: Check & edit using checklist
