3
Language doesn't just help us communicate. It also influences how we think about the world, what we notice and even how we see ourselves and others.
Goal:
Explore how language shapes perspectives at personal, cultural and societal levels.

1. The Psychology of Language
2. Framing and Perception.
3. Language in Media
4. The Power of Labels.
5
The concept of Linguistic Relativity.
The idea of linguistic relativity means that the language you speak can shape how you think. Not completely, but it can influence what you pay attention to and how you understand things.

6
The Psychology of Language.
Words trigger emotional and cognitive responses.
There are different words for SNOW in Inuit language compared to English and that shows different perceptions of the same phenomenon.
Inuit - aput (snow on the ground)
qana (falling snow)
muruaneq (soft, deep snow)
The richness of these terms reflects the significant cultural importance of snow for Inuit peoples, providing detailed knowledge necessary for survival and daily life.
7
Framing and Perception.
The way words are formed around a particular thing changes how it's percieved. This is why Political, Marketing and Media narratives use framing to influence opinions
Eg- A protest could be worded as
1. A disruptive "mob"
2. A legitimate call for "justice"

Language in Media
Headlines, ads and social media captions use persuasive language to make emotional and value-loaded impact on the public to shape their opinions.
Example: News coverage of protests - riot vs demonstration.
a. “City Descends into Chaos as Rioters Clash with Police”
b. “Demonstrators Call for Change Amid Growing Public Outcry”
9
Psychological Impact of Word Choice in Headlines
1. Emotional Framing
"Riot" triggers fear, chaos, and lawlessness. It suggests violence, danger, and criminality.
"Demonstration" conveys civic engagement, organized action, and legitimate expression of opinion.
2. Perception of Participants
Those called “rioters” may be seen as aggressors or criminals.
Those called “demonstrators” are perceived as concerned citizens, activists, or advocates for change.
3. Public Response & Policy Influence
"Riot" headlines can justify increased police presence, harsher laws, and public condemnation.
"Demonstration" headlines can prompt dialogue, reforms, or community engagement.
4. Cognitive Bias Activation
Word choice activates confirmation bias—readers interpret events to fit pre-existing beliefs about order, protest, or authority.
10
The Power of Labels.
Labels affect self-perception and social treatment.
"Gifted" Vs "Disabled"
Disabilities like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia can manifest as unique gifts or talents, a phenomenon known as "twice-exceptionality" (2e). These individuals possess exceptional abilities in one area alongside a learning difference or disability, leading to unique problem-solving skills, enhanced creativity, and deep focus in specific domains, though these strengths can sometimes mask the disability.
The use of inclusive and respectful languages can never be overemphasized.
11
In summary:
If you have used a microscope, a telescope or a wide- angle lens, then you can tell how each language could give you a different views of the same world.
Languages don't just help us talk - they guide how we think, what we notice and how we understand the world.
Different words can lead to different thoughts.
