What are Idioms?

Idioms are special expressions used in everyday language. They are groups of words put together, but their meaning is not the same as the words’ dictionary meanings. Instead, idioms have a figurative (hidden) meaning that native speakers understand.

Why do people use idioms?

  • To make language more colorful and interesting.

    • Instead of saying “I’m very tired,” people might say “I’m worn out.”

  • To express feelings and ideas in a creative way.

    • Instead of “start talking,” people might say “break the ice.”

5

How do idioms work?

  • Literal meaning: What the words normally mean.

  • Figurative meaning: The hidden or special meaning that the idiom carries.
