What is copyright?

• A form of protection given to authors or creators.

• It protects you when you create something

Copyright

You automatically own the rights even if it is something you create at home or even in class.

You along have the rights to (or let others)

• Make copies of your work.

• Distribute copies of your work.

• Make derivative works. (Adapt your work for new uses.)

Violating someone's copyright is against the law. Copying solely the copyrighted work of others without any credit is called Plagiarism.

Plagiarism = copying without credit.
Copyright infringement = copying without permission.

Which works are protected?

• Literary works - includes software.

• Musical works - includes accompanying words.

• Dramatic works - includes any music.

• Pantomimes and choreography.

• Motion pictures.

• Sound recordings.
