Similar to a RACE response, our body paragraphs in essays require evidence to support our answers. The only difference is background on the topic is needed in the paragraph as well.

Body Paragraphs

This is the format we use to answer questions that require evidence. We will:

Restate PART of the question and Answer it in our own words.

Then we Cite evidence. Lastly, we Explain the connection between the evidence and our answer.

RACE response

RACE is also how to write a paragraph!!

27

Example RACE response

Question: What is the theme of the song?

(Restate part of the question) The theme of the song (Answer) is to never give up. (Cite evidence) In the lyrics it states, "Pick yourself up and dust yourself off, get back in the saddle." (Explain) These lyrics show that when you fail, you should recover and try again.

NOTICE the explanation DID NOT REPEAT the answer!!!

You do NOT need to put the whole question at the start of your answer. There should be NO questions in your RACE response.

"What is the theme of the song? The theme of the song..."

Repeating the question

When evidence from the text is needed, you need to copy directly from the text.

This allows the reader to clearly see what your evidence says

"This is in the chorus of the song."

No quote from the text

A tagline is an introduction to a quote. This lets your reader know these are not your words, but someone else's.

No tag line for quote
