Figurative Language Practice

​Figurative language is all around us. In the books we read, the songs we listen to, even in our speech. Test your knowledge of figurative language by completing the lesson that follows.

What are the different types of figurative language?

There are many different types of figurative language. Here are the main ones you need to know. To help you remember them, use the acronym ISHAMPOO.

Idioms are a phrase that actually means something different from its literal meaning.

Hyperbole is an exaggerated statement that is not meant to be taken literally. It's meant to emphasize something.

What is Theme?

The theme of a story is the underlying message in the story. The theme is not directly stated but is implied. The reader must think about the character's experiences and choices to come up with the theme of the story.

How can we find the theme?

Think about:

1. What is the BIG idea in this story?
2. What larger message is the author trying to convey?
3. What did the author want the reader to understand?

WHAT IS POINT OF VIEW?

A story is told from the perspective of either a
character within the story or from a narrator
outside of the story.

This is point of view!

Point of view is the
perspective used to tell a story.

Why is POV Important?

When an author writes a story, they make a

deliberate choice in which point of view (perspective)

to use to tell that story. The point of view is

important because it significantly influences the plot.

The POV determines how much (or what) information will be

revealed to the reader.
