Healthcare providers need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse such as:
-unexplained bruises, fracture (broken bones), burns or injuries
-signs of neglect such as poor person hygiene
-irrational fears or change in personality
-aggressive or withdrawn behavior
-switching doctors frequently (so they don't see a pattern)
-anxious to please the abuser
-abuser doesn't allow the person to have private conversations
-patient statements that indicate abuse or neglect
(The signs/Symptoms do NOT always mean abuse is occurring, but it should be reported so the appropriate authorities may investigate further.)
