The Rock Cycle

The rock cycle describes how the three major rock types: Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic- transform from one type to another over geologic time through processes like melting, cooling, weathering, erosion, compaction, and heat & pressure.

Earth's internal heat and external forces like water and wind- this slow, continuous cycle of rock formation, destruction, and reformation never truly ends, as mineral grains have survived for billions of years through it.

media
media

Form when molten rock (magma or lava) cools and solidifies, often occurring near volcanoes or deep underground.

Igneous rock

Form from sediment (small fragments of other rocks and organic matter) that is weathered, eroded, transported, and then compacted and cemented together.

Sedimentary rock

Form when existing igneous or sedimentary rocks are subjected to intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth, causing their mineral structures to change within melting completely.

Metamorphic rock

The Grand Canyon
The oldest rocks (Vishnu Schist) are about 1.7-2.0 billion years old.
The youngest layers (Kaibab Limestone at the rim) are about 270 million years ago.

This huge time span shows multiple rock cycle events: uplift, erosion, deposition, Intrusion, and metamorphism.
