MEDICINES OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Ignaz Semmelweis was a doctor in the (1840s / 1940s). He worked with women who were (giving birth / dying). He noticed that the women in one ward were dying more often than those in another ward. Doctors in the first ward spent part of the day working with (babies / dead bodies). These doctors were  (passing germs to / not spending enough time with) the new mothers. Semmelweis insisted that all (cleaners / carers) must  (drink / wash their hands in) disinfectant, a liquid that kills germs. The death rate quickly decreased.
