• James disagreed

• King James Version of the Bible - 1611

• Spent too much money, began overtaxing the people

(1603-1625)

• REALLY overtaxed the people

• Parliament made him sign the Petition of Right which limited his power

• He ignored it which sparked the English Civil War (1645-1649)

• Parliament won

• Charles beheaded for Treason

​Charles I
(1625-1649)

• Led the Parliament military forces during the Civil War

• He promised to create a republic

• Parliament gave him the power

• He created a military dictatorship called the Commonwealth

• Died in 1658

• Parliament decided to restore the monarchy

Oliver Cromwell
(1649-1658)

• More easy going than his father

• Agreed to law of Habeas Corpus

  • the people can ask or challenge their detainment

• Respected Parliament's right to control taxation

• Died in 1685

​Charles II
(1660-1685)

• Brother of Charles II, son of Charles I

• Not as nice as his brother

• Catholic

• Violated English laws

• Dissolved Parliament

• Parliament reached out to someone to do something about James II

James II
(1685-1688)

• Parliament invited James II's Protestant daughter Mary to invade and take over the monarchy in England

• James II was fearful and fled

• Mary II and William III ruled jointly

• Created the Constitutional Monarchy

• Signed the English Bill of Rights (1689)

  • Protected rule of law and speech
