THE ROSE

There was once a poor woman who had two children. The youngest had to go, every day, into the forest to fetch wood. Once when she had gone a long way to seek it, a little child, who was quite strong, came and helped her industriously to pick up the wood and carry it home, and then, before a moment had passed, the strange child disappeared.

The child told her mother this, but at first she would not believe it. At length she brought a rose home, and told her mother that the beautiful child had given her this rose and had told her that when it was in full bloom, her child would return. The mother put the rose in water. One morning, her child could not get out of bed. The mother went to the bed and found her dead, but she lay looking very happy. On the same morning, the rose was in full bloom.

THE TRUTH ABOUT VIDEOGAMES, PLEASE!

On June 27th, 2011, the Supreme Court invalidated California's law prohibiting the sale or rental of violent videogames to people under 18. On a practical level, it was never clear which games might be classified under the law, or who would decide. But more important, the state's case was built on assumption — that violent games cause children psychological or neurological harm and make them more aggressive and likely to harm other people — that are not supported by evidence. In the end, the case serves only to highlight how little we know about this medium and its effects on our children.

REBUILDING NEW ORLEANS

On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina created a storm surge which flooded 80 per cent of New Orleans and claimed 1,500 lives. Across the world, television images showed a city under water and people clinging to rooftops. Six years later, the TV crews have long gone and the world's attention is elsewhere. But for many residents of the city, the slow process of rebuilding their lives continues.

Wayne's sadness over Jacinta was the sadness all sons and daughters feel when their ferry starts moving and the parent stands on the dock, waving and growing tiny. A sadness that stings, then melts in a fresh wind.

CONTEMPORARY INDIAN SITUATION IN BRAZIL

The 1988 Brazilian Constitution recognises indigenous peoples' right to pursue their traditional ways of life and to the permanent and exclusive possession of their "traditional lands", which are demarcated as Indigenous Territories. In practice, however, Brazil's indigenous people still face a number of external threats and challenges to their continued existence and cultural heritage. The process of demarcation is slow – often involving protracted legal battles – and FUNAI do not have sufficient resources to enforce the legal protection on indigenous land. Since the 1980s there has been a boom in the exploitation of the Amazon Rainforest for mining, logging and cattle ranching, posing a severe threat to the region's indigenous population. Settlers illegally encroaching on indigenous land continue to destroy the environment necessary for indigenous peoples' traditional ways of life, provoke violent confrontations and spread disease. Peoples such as the Akuntsu and Kanoê have been brought to the brink of extinction within the last three decades.

Multiple Choice
