Uses

Writers use parentheses to explain what something means or to give extra information

Meaning: You can see giraffes (animals with very longs necks).
Extra Information: There are snacks (sandwiches and cakes).

More examples:

• We saw a dove (a white bird) in the park.

• She bought a violin (a small guitar) yesterday.

• My best friend (he’s very funny) came to my house.

• We went to the zoo (it was very hot that day).

They add more detail but are not necessary.


Ex. My friend (Steve) is at home.
He goes to the supermarket (Walmart).
