THEME
Learning Target: I can read close read a text and use details to determine the theme.
By Brendan Mccann
2
The topic of a story is what the story is about. It’s usually a single word or phrase, like family, freedom, or love.
The theme is what the author wants us to understand about that topic. It’s a message, lesson, or truth about life.
For example:
Topic → Love
Theme → Love can bring both joy and pain.
A story can have more than one theme.
DEFINE:
What Is a Theme?
3
Multiple Choice
Which statement best describes a theme?
A one-word subject of a story.
The central idea or message about life.
The name of the main character.
4
Writers don’t always tell readers the theme. Instead, they show it through:
Characters – what they do, say, and learn
Setting – where and when the story happens
Plot – how events unfold and what lessons they teach
When a theme isn’t stated directly, readers must infer it — that means using reasoning and text evidence to figure it out.

The theme is not just what happens — it’s what the story says about life.
Readers use clues from the story to figure out the theme by noticing:
The topic of the story (what it’s about)
Character actions and feelings
The problems they face and how they solve them
Tone or mood
In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, the Logans face fear, unfairness, and tough choices. Let’s see how those details reveal a theme.

Multiple Choice
Which question will help you identify a story’s theme?
Who is the main character?
What lesson or message is being shared through the events?
How many settings are there?

Notice how Mama and Papa respond differently to danger.
Mama shows fear and anxiety.
Papa stays calm and protective.
This contrast helps reveal a theme — that even in scary times, people must decide whether to act out of fear or strength.
Example Student 1
“Don’t keep anything from me, David. If there’s trouble, I want to know.”
Mama sighed and stared out across the plowed field to the sloping pasture land. “I’m feeling scared, David,” she said.
Papa put down the towel. “Not yet, Mary. It’s not time to be scared yet. They’re just talking.”

Multiple Select
Which details help reveal the theme in this passage? (Select all that apply.)
Mama’s fear about what’s coming
Papa’s calm words and actions

The name of the town they live in

Here, Cassie starts with hope, asking Papa to stay. But each line is shorter and interrupted — it shows her hope slipping away.
Mama’s quiet voice in the shadows adds to the feeling of fear and loss.
This moment helps readers see another theme: Fear can make people lose hope, even when they try to stay strong.
Example Student 2
“Papa, just another week or two, couldn’t you—”
“I can’t, baby. May have lost my job already.”
“But Papa—”
“Cassie, that’s enough now,” Mama said from the deepening shadows.

Here’s how we’ll do it:
Read the passage carefully. Pay attention to what the characters say and do.
Think about the emotions the words and actions show.
Look for a message or lesson that connects those feelings to a bigger idea.
