What Are Determiners?

A determiner is a word that comes at the beginning of a noun phrase.

• They make sentences clearer, like 'I saw a cat' instead of 'I saw cat'.
• Determiners tell us if a noun is specific or if it is general.
• They also show how many of something there are or who it belongs to.

Let's find determiners in: 'My friend found an old coin near those tall trees.'

• First, we find the nouns in the sentence: 'friend,' 'coin,' and 'trees.'
• 'My' is a determiner because it tells us whose friend it is.
• 'An' is an article that introduces the noun 'coin' as a single coin.
• 'Those' points out which specific trees we are talking about in the sentence.

The three determiners we found are 'My,' 'an,' and 'those.'
