  • listed building (Grade I, II* and II)

  • scheduled monument

  • conservation area

  • World Heritage Site

  • local listing

  • Ecclesiastical Exemption.

Types of heritage protection for buildings and structures include:

5

Heritage Building

A heritage building is any building that has a historical and cultural importance to the community. These are often listed buildings.

6

Listed Buildings

Grade I: buildings of exceptional interest, of the highest significance.

Grade II: buildings of special interest, warranting every effort to
preserve them.

Grade II*: particularly important buildings of more than special interest.

Legislation covering listed buildings and conservation areas include the Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas Act 1990.

7

Scheduled Monument

Is an historic site or building that’s legally protected because it’s super important to our history and culture. These places can be anything from ancient castles and Roman forts to old mines or prehistoric stone circles.

Once something is “scheduled,” it means it’s officially recognised by the government and can’t be changed or damaged without special permission. It’s like putting a “Do Not Disturb” sign on a piece of history!

8

Conservation Area

If you live in a conservation area you will need ‘conservation area consent’ before carrying out a range of work.

  • Demolish a building with a volume of more than 115 m3 .

  • Demolish a gate, fence or railing more than 1m high next to a highway or more that 2m anywhere else.

  • Replace windows or change the appearance of a building.

9

World Heritage Site

A World Heritage Site is a place that’s so special, it’s protected by the United Nations because it’s important to everyone on Earth — not just one country. These places can be natural (like the Grand Canyon), man-made (like the Pyramids of Egypt), or a mix of both.

10

Local Listings & Ecclesiastical Exemptions

When a building does not meet the national criteria but is of special local interest it can be given the status of a local listing.

Under Ecclesiastical Exemptions (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Wales) Order 2018, some religious denominations are not required to obtain listed building consent from the local planning authority to carry out work to their listed place of worship.
