Recall that the Pythagorean Theorem is a formula that applies only to right triangles.
a2 + b2= c2
You can model it with Squares.

Which of the following sentences would belong in the proof that describes this image?

1

The sum of the areas of the two smaller squares is equal to the area of the large square.

2

The sum of the side lengths of the two smaller squares is equal to the side length of the large square.

3

The difference of the areas of the two smaller squares is equal to the area of the large square.

4

The differences of the side lengths of the two smaller squares is equal to the side length of the large square.

8

Classifying a Right Triangle

Applying the Pythagorean Theorem

Recall that you can determine if a triangle is a right triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem's converse:
If a2+b2=c2, then the triangle is a right triangle.
Step 1: Square the legs of the triangle (the two smallest lengths)
Step 2: Add the squares of the legs
Step 3: Square the hypotenuse (the longest length)
Step 4: Compare Step 2 and Step 3, if the same value then it is a right triangle, if not-- then it still could be a triangle but it isn't a right triangle.
