RELATIIVIPRONOMINIT

• aloittavat relatiivilauseen (relative clause).

• liittävät relatiivilauseen sitä edeltävään pääsanaan eli korrelaattiin tai koko lauseeseen.

  • She is the girl whose brother I've met.

  • They surprised me, which was nice.

• What-pronominilla ei ole korrelaattia, koska se ei aloita relatiivilausetta, vaan sitä käytetään esimerkiksi virkkeen subjektissa tai objektissa.

  • Listen to what he has to say!

• Kiinteä relatiivilause antaa tietoa siitä, mistä puhutaan, sitä ei eroteta muusta virkkeestä pilkulla.

  • The man who stole my backpack has been arrested.

• That-pronomini aloittaa aina kiinteän relatiivilauseen, joten sen eteen ei tule koskaan pilkkua.

  • The weather that we had this summer was beautiful.

• Irrallinen relatiivilause antaa lisätietoa pääsanasta tai koko lauseesta, se erotetaan muusta virkkeestä aina pilkuilla ja voidaan jättää pois ilman, että virkkeen merkitys muuttuu.

  • The farmer, whose name was Fred, sold us 10 pounds of potatoes.

• Niiltä puuttuvat myös eri aikamuodot (vaikka verbejä could ja would sekä joskus myös verbejä might ja should voidaankin pitää verbien can, will, may ja shall imperfektimuotoina). Puuttuvien muotojen takia verbeistä käytetään monesti erilaisia kiertoilmaisuja.
