The MacArthur PLan

• Goal: replaced the League of Nations

• 1946 - League of Nations becomes UN

The United Nations

• June 1948 - USA, UK, and France allow West Germany to be independent

• Soviet Union blockades West Berlin, attempted to force control

• USA and UK airlift supplies

• Last until May 1949

• Creation of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) - 10 western European countries + USA and Canada

• 1955 - Creation of Warsaw Pact - seven eastern European countries + USSR
