A Canadian man has become the first person from North America and the eighth person ever to sail around the world alone without using any electronic help or GPS equipment to find his way.
Bert terHart, 62, began the trip in Victoria, British Columbia, on October 27, 2019, on his 13-meter boat called Seaburban. He completed the trip 265 days later in July.
He traveled around five capes — one in Chile, one in South Africa, two in Australia and one in New Zealand.
4
His trip was difficult at times and terHart only had about four hours of sleep each day. The weather didn't make things easy either, with waves sometimes reaching 4.5 meters high. However, he said the sights on the trip, like the stars, birds, sunsets and sunrises, had been "just amazing."
TerHart has always been interested in how people traveled at sea in the past.
5
By completing the trip, terHart hopes to inspire people to follow their dreams. "Once you take that first step, the next step is easier, and the step after that becomes easier," he said.
According to Guinness World Records, the first person to sail around the world alone and without stopping was Robin Knox-Johnston from the UK in 1969.
