Words of Negation - Unit 6

Today we will learn how to express negative meaning using different forms:

• not

• no

• none

• neither

• nor

❓ “When do we use negative sentences in daily life?”

Why we learn this?

We use negative forms to express:

⛔ impossibility
⛔ absence
⛔ disagreement
⛔ something is NOT true

Example situations:

• talking about technology problems

• pollution

• lack of resources

• no access to internet

Not

NOT + verb / adjective / adverb

Examples:

• Space exploration is not cheap.

• We are not ready to send humans to Mars.

• The results are not good.

👉 Students give 2 sentences using not in pairs.

No

NO + noun

No = 0 amount

Examples:

• There is no light pollution in remote deserts.

• Many areas have no internet coverage.

⚠ difference:
NOT = before verb / adjective
NO = before noun

Meaning = zero people / zero things

Used alone (not before noun)

Examples:

• Many companies promised action, but none happened.

• We asked for volunteers, but none came.

Used to talk about two items, both negative.

Example:

• Neither system was effective.

We do NOT use NOT with it.

Neither/Nor

Used to connect TWO negative ideas.

Example:

• Scientists have neither enough data nor enough equipment.

• Space travel is neither cheap nor safe.
