Recap

You have read and analyzed Chapters 1 and 12 of the novel. Take a look at what you have learned so far.

Nellie:

A 14‑year‑old living in rural Bly, Oregon during late WWII. She spends her days stargazing, missing her father who’s away with the Army Air Force, and longing for the boy next door, Joey, to speak to her again. She’s impacted deeply by the war. She contemplates patriotic duties versus daily life. At school, Nellie grapples with shifting relationships. Joey—once her confidant—has grown distant following his brother’s death. Nellie continues her war‑effort work: hosting salvage drives, canning for victory gardens, and learning about war production. Nellie grows increasingly anxious when her father doesn’t write. The tension explodes—literally. The object turns out to be a firebomb attached to a paper balloon—one of Japan’s Fu‑Go weapons; it detonates, killing several of Nellie’s schoolmates and shaking the entire town.

Recap

You have read and analyzed Chapters 1 and 12 of the novel. Take a look at what you have learned so far.

Tamiko:

Tamiko Nakaoka, a 14-year-old orphan living with polio, reflects in her diary. She dreams of designing theatrical costumes and fervently prays for her older brother, Kyo, serving in the Imperial Army, to return safely. Tamiko and her classmates are sent to a damp, makeshift theater in the city to assemble large paper balloons for the war effort. Conflicting stories and the vague secrecy surrounding her tasks create internal conflict—Tamiko is torn between loyalty to her country and moral unease. The truth hits when mission details surface: the balloons are actually firebombs bound for America. Tamiko confronts the terrifying reality of their intent—to harm civilians.
