Transverse Waves
Light is a form of RADIANT ENERGY that travels as a transverse wave in a straight path.
Radiant energy can produce thermal energy depending on how it's used.
Radiant energy and thermal energy ARE NOT the same.
It DOES NOT need a medium through which to move.
Amplitude in a transverse wave refers to brightness

radiant energy
6
Multiple Choice
Radiant energy can produce thermal energy, however radiant energy and thermal energy are not the same. True or False?
7
Multiple Choice
The sun is an example of radiant energy producing...
8
Multiple Choice
Transverse waves travel in a...
circular motion
straight path
left to right
least to greatest
9
Multiple Choice
Amplitude in a transverse wave refers to its...

Light
Visible light is a form of radiant energy that can be seen and can interact in different ways when it contacts an object.
Energy may take different forms, including radiant energy. Radiant energy that can be seen by the human eye is called visible light.
The visible spectrum has a range of colors that are determined by wavelength. The colors of the visible spectrum from the longest wavelength to the shortest wavelength are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet (ROYGBV).
The sum of these colors is white light.
12
Visible Light Frequency
Frequency is the number of waves passing a given point in a designated time. The greater the frequency, the greater the amount of energy.
13
Multiple Choice
Radiant energy that can be seen by the human eye is called...
14
Multiple Choice
Which color has the longest wavelength and shortest frequency?
Yellow
Red
Blue
Violet
15
Multiple Choice
Which color has the shortest wavelength and highest frequency?
Violet
Yellow
Orange
Green
16
Multiple Choice
Which color on the visible spectrum (ROYGBV) produces the most energy?
17
Reflection Vs Refraction
Light travels in straight paths until it hits an object, where it is reflected, refracted, transmitted, and/or absorbed.
Refraction, or bending of waves, include:
refraction causing a setting sun to look flat
a spoon appearing to bend when immersed in a cup of water
a glass prism dispersing white light into its individual colors as the colors refract at different angles (as visible light exits the prism, it is refracted and separated into the visible spectrum).
Reflection occurs when light bounces off an object.
Example of this is
light hitting a mirror.
18
Multiple Choice
Light travels in straight paths until...
it is reflected,
refracted, absorbed and transmitted
it is turned off and turned back on
it hits a solid object
it travels to space
19
Multiple Choice
This is an example of
reflection
refraction
20
Multiple Choice
Why does the straw appear to be bent?
light is reflected
light is absorbed
light is turned
light is refracted
21
Multiple Choice
When does reflection occur?
When light spins in a circle
When light bounces off of an object
22
Multiple Choice
What is the best explanation for Mickey seeing himself in the mirror?
refraction
absorbed
reflection
flipped
23
Light Passes Through
Light passes through some materials
easily (transparent materials)
partially (translucent materials)
not at all (opaque materials)
24
light passes through easily
transparent
Some light passes through
translucent
no light passes through
opaque
25
Multiple Choice
When an object is transparent...
It allows light to fully pass through
It absorbs all light and does not allow it to pass
It reflects all light
26
Multiple Choice
What type of material is this?
translucent
transparent
opaque
27
Multiple Choice
These objects are translucent which means...
Translucent objects allow some light to pass through
28
Multiple Choice
In which of the following options are all materials transparent?
Window, books, and stained glass
Wooden table, books, and rocks
Shower curtain, stained glass, and frosted window
Clear water, window, and magnifying glass
