  • August 1942-August 1945 - Manhattan Project

    • $2 Billion spent developing atomic bomb

  • August 1949 - Soviet's have nuclear technology

  • November 1952 - USA - first hydrogen bomb

  • August 1953 - USSR - hydrogen bomb

  • August 1957 - USSR - first ICBM

  • October 1957 - USSR - Sputnik launches (start of the Space Race)

  • MAD - Mutually Assured Destruction

Stop the Spread

  • October 1963 - Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

    • USA, USSR, UK

    • Banned testing nukes in the atmosphere, space, and underwater

    • Goal: reduce environmental impacts of radiation

  • July 1968 - Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

    • Signed by 137 countries

    • Goal: limit the spread of nuclear weapon technology

  • Disarmament efforts continued into the 1970's but met resistance from military and manufacturers
