The holidays are often shown as perfectly happy times on TV or social media, but real life can feel very different.
Question: Think about the difference between comparing yourself to others (how many gifts they get, how fun their vacation looks, etc.) and feeling content (happy and satisfied with what you already have).
What is one thing you can do each day this week to focus on contentment and gratitude (being thankful) instead of comparison during the holiday season?

Topic | Statistic to Observe (Simplified for Clarity) | Possible Discussion Question |
Sadness & Stress | 64% of people who already have a mental health challenge say their problems get worse around the holidays. | If this season is hard for many people, how can we be kinder to ourselves and each other? |
Comparison | 36% of adults feel that the holidays are like a competition (trying to "win" with gifts, plans, or happiness). | Why do you think people feel like the holidays are a competition, and how does that feeling hurt the "holiday spirit"? |
Financial Pressure | The top cause of holiday stress is money (spending too much or not having enough). | What is one way a person can celebrate the holidays and show love without spending a lot of money? |
The Joy of Giving | 83% of people who give gifts say it makes them feel good to give, no matter what they get in return. | If giving makes most people feel good, what is a simple way you could give a gift of time or kindness instead of a material gift? |
Materialism | 90% of Americans wish the holidays were less about gifts and more about family and caring for others. | If almost everyone agrees the holidays are too focused on buying things, what could be one new tradition our community could start that isn't about shopping? |

Steps to follow
1.,"Draw a Chain: On your paper, draw a chain with at least 5 links."
2.,"Write 5 Thanks: Inside each link, write ONE thing you are truly thankful for (grateful for) that did NOT cost any money."
Examples:
Laughing with my cousin.
A warm blanket.
Clean air to breathe.
3.,Review: Look at your chain. These are your sources of contentment (being happy with what you have).
4
Goal: Give advice to someone feeling sad about comparison.
Imagine: Your new neighbor is sad because their family doesn't have a lot of money for a big Christmas. They feel like everyone else has more.
Write a short note (3-5 sentences) to your neighbor to help them feel better. Use your chain to give advice. Your Note Must Include: Advice: Tell them that contentment is better than comparison. Idea: Share one simple, no-cost idea from your chain that they could do this holiday season to feel happy.
