Also called Mixed Media Sculpture, a 3D collage is made using many of the same techniques as a 2D collage. The only differences are 1.) the 'canvas' or frame used or 2.) the fact that this collage can be viewed from all angles.
How is it different from 2D?
3
If you have a large object that symbolically relates to your work, you could turn it into the base on which everything else is attached - just make sure that it's firm & sturdy, so that you can glue stuff down to it!
Find a base

Then add your collage.
This can be really helpful if you want your collage to interact with the base that it's sitting on, or to add more meaning to your work overall.

Multiple Select
Pick the 2 items which would make for good BASES.

If you took the 3D art class, you might remember plastering, where you can create any form you like out of aluminum foil and plastering over it like paper mache.
Create the base.
This allows you to create a custom-shaped base on which to build your collage, and can be helpful if you want a specific item/form but don't have it on hand.
Then add your collage.

With a wooden block, an aluminum wire, and some sheer nylon, you can create an organically-shaped base canvas - no need to shape it into anything specific.
