Verb + たい = want to (verb)

In a previous lesson, you learned the expression for “eat” using the ~ます form of the verb.

• たまごを　たべます。 — “I eat eggs.”

Now, instead of ending in ~ます, the ending is ～たい. This form expresses “want to.”

• たまごを　たべたい。— “I want to eat eggs.”

You also see the words なにか. You have seen なにを to ask “what?” なにか means “something” in a yes-no question:

• なにか　たべたい　ですか。 ー “Do you want to eat something?”

​To form the -たい form, we drop ～ます and add たい！
