AI is a set of technologies that uses complex computer systems to draw on data and information to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence
computer systems study thousands of sources to compile information and create a knowledge bank
algorithm: set of instructions that tell the computer how to complete a task or make a decision
Artificial Intelligence
6
Discussion Time!
What are your personal opinions how AI can BENEFIT society?
What are your personal opinions how AI can HARM society?
Should we grow it or end it?
7
AI programs study thousands of musical examples to understand:
rhythm patterns
melody and harmony structures
music composition rules
lyric and rhyming patterns
specific genres and styles
8
AI and Copyright
AI cannot determine if music is copyright-protected. AI is meant to copy the general sound and feel of music.
If it copies too much, it could be a target for lawsuits of taking music without permission.
9
Over 200 high-profile musicians signed a letter calling for protections against use of AI to mimic human artists' voices, sound, likeness. Some artists who signed: Billie Eilish, Stevie Wonder, Nicki Minaj, Bob Marley*, Frank Sinatra*, JOn bon Jovi, Katy Perry,...
These concerns also exist amongst movie/tv actors!
10
Do YOU think AI should be used to create art? Why or Why not?
11
idea generator for lyrics, song topics, etc.
AI can use thousands of sources to help create new material based on previously successful material
12
Think of your goal (what is the song about?)
Identify your audience (who is this song for?)
Use clear language (use clear, precise language; no slang)
Add details (what do you want included in it?)
Provide details (what do you want it to sound like?)
prompts: request given to an AI system to generate a response

Multiple Choice
Which of the following is the BEST AI prompt for writing song lyrics about school?
Write a song about going to school.
Write four lines of upbeat lyrics with a rhyming pattern about going to school the day before winter break.
Write four lines of lyrics for a song about going to school.
14
Choosing the right AI tool is very important as they do not all work the same!
Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered tool within the Microsoft platform (such as Word and PowerPoint)
There are some AI tools specifically for creating music!
15
Generating AI Lyrics: Example
Open your AI tool
Create a specific, direct prompt
Ask it to modify the lyrics to reflect more of what you are looking for
Ex. attending cyber school, taking music class, etc.
16
OPEN Microsoft CoPilot
17
Create Your Own AI Lyrics
Choose any school appropriate topic and create 4 lines of lyrics
Create a prompt by thinking about:
the topic for your song, number of lines of lyrics (4), and other details that you'd like included
You can edit these lyrics by asking it to try new things or make changes
18
Create an AI Melody
Ask AI to "write a melody to go with these lyrics in 4/4 time using the notes of the C major scale"
This tool can provide basic notes, but cannot give specific rhythms
When done, screenshot your lyrics and melody!
19
While AI offers opportunities to assist in creating music, there are some important issues to consider. Music created with AI:
may lack emotional depth
can sound artificial
may be limited by available references
may not include all technical parts of the notation like time signature and note values
may violate copyright laws
20
21
We will use the remainder of class time to generate your AI lyrics and melody.
We will do a similar thing for assignment 5.11, so use this time to fully understand how to create lyrics in AI!
