Primary Succession- Establishment of a community in an area of BARE ROCK or BARE SAND, no topsoil present. Pioneer species include mosses and lichens. Can take up to hundreds of years to form into a climax community.

Secondary Succession
- Occurs after a disturbance (can be natural disaster or manmade). Soil is still present. Pioneer species include annual plants, grasses and herbs. Takes several decades to form back into a climax community.
