ROMULUS AND REMUS , THE MYTH

The Story:

  • Twin brothers Romulus and Remus were abandoned as babies

  • A she-wolf 🐺 found and raised them

  • When grown, they decided to build a city

  • They argued over the location

  • Romulus won, built walls, and became Rome's FIRST KING

  • He named the city ROMA after himself

Remember: This is a MYTH - a special story that explains beginnings

REAL ROMAN PLACE

Location:

  • Country: ITALY (the boot-shaped peninsula)

  • City: ROME (the capital)

  • Time: Began around 753 BC (over 2,750 years ago!)

Perfect Spot:

  • Built on 7 HILLS (for defense against enemies)

  • Next to the TIBER RIVER (for water, trade, travel)

  • In CENTRAL ITALY (good position to expand)

  • Rome was in italy , and still exists today

👑 PATRICIANS: THE NOBLE FAMILIES

  • Who they were:
    Wealthy, powerful families who could trace their ancestors to Rome's earliest founders.

  • Their power:

    • Held high government & religious offices

    • Sat in the Senate

    • Owned large estates (villas) and businesses

    • Made the laws that everyone had to follow

  • Life:
    Lived in luxury with many slaves, ate expensive foods, wore fine togas with purple stripes.

Normal roman citizens were called Plebes. They were not as rich as patricians

PLEBEIANS (PLEBS): THE COMMON PEOPLE

  • Who they were:
    Ordinary citizens - shopkeepers, craftworkers, soldiers, farmers. Made up 90% of Rome's citizens!

  • Their struggle:

    • Initially had few rights & couldn't hold high office

    • Fought for centuries for more power ("Conflict of the Orders")

    • Eventually won: could be consuls, laws written down (Twelve Tables)

  • Life:
    Lived in
    crowded apartments (insulae), often poor but PROUD TO BE ROMAN CITIZENS
