How to write a Short Answer Response

What Is a Short Answer Response?

A Short Answer response is one organized paragraph that answers a question using evidence from the text.

You will use RACES every time.

RACES =

• Restate the question

• Answer clearly

• Cite evidence from the text

• Expand & explain the evidence

• Sum it up

What Your Paragraph MUST Include

Your paragraph must have:

• Topic sentence (restate + answer)

• Supporting sentences (text evidence)

• Explanation sentences (Explain why the evidence matters)

• Concluding sentence (Sum it up)
