Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in all living things, from tiny bacteria to complex organisms like humans. According to the cell theory, all living things are made of cells, cells come from preexisting cells, and cells carry out the functions necessary for life.
Although cells vary in size and shape depending on their roles, they all contain structures that help them perform life processes such as obtaining energy, removing waste, and responding to their environment.
3
In both plant and animal cells, organelles work together like parts of a system to keep the cell alive. The nucleus stores genetic information that controls the cell’s activities, while ribosomes build proteins needed for growth and repair.
The mitochondria release energy from food molecules through cellular respiration, and in plant cells, chloroplasts capture light energy to make sugars during photosynthesis.
The cell membrane regulates what enters and leaves the cell, helping maintain a stable internal environment.
4
Cells also interact with one another to form larger levels of organization. Similar cells group to make tissues, which build organs that work together in organ systems.
For example, muscle cells form muscle tissue that helps the heart pump blood. Multicellular organisms depend on this coordinated system of cells to transport materials, communicate signals, and maintain overall stability. Understanding cells helps explain how living things grow, repair damage, and carry out the processes that sustain life.
