European countries are very small when it comes to the size of land. Because of this there weren't as many natural resources such as timber (trees), metals like copper, silver and gold (they hoped), iron, and animal furs.
Natural Resources
During the 15th and 16th centuries, the amount of land a country had could make that country more powerful. Most European nations wanted to be more powerful than their enemies, so they established more settlements.

In just 126 years, the first 13 colonies of the New World were established.
These colonies were not just one small town, but regions that contained many towns and cities.
What did one permanent settlement mean?

There were times that the colonists got along with the natives who lived here, and other times that they did not.
The colonists would not have survived their early years though had it not been for the help of people like the Powhatan and Pocahontas.
