European countries are very small when it comes to the size of land. Because of this there weren't as many natural resources such as timber (trees), metals like copper, silver and gold (they hoped), iron, and animal furs.

Natural Resources

During the 15th and 16th centuries, the amount of land a country had could make that country more powerful. Most European nations wanted to be more powerful than their enemies, so they established more settlements.
