From "Uh-oh" to "I'm Sorry"
Charles P. Murray Middle School - SEL Lesson on Apologizing
2
Saying Sorry
Disagreements are a natural part of everyday life, and handling them in a positive way is important.
When you have hurt someone, taking responsibility and apologizing matters. A sincere apology can rebuild trust, improve understanding, and help relationships grow stronger.
3
Turn and Talk
Not every apology has the same impact. Some are far more genuine and effective than others.
Turn to your neighbor and come up with at least five qualities that make an apology truly meaningful and effective.
4
What Makes a Good Apology?
Timely: Say sorry quickly to show you care, because waiting too long can make it seem like you don’t really mean it.
Sincerity: A real apology should be honest and heartfelt, showing you truly regret what you did, not just saying sorry to get out of trouble.
Specific: Be specific about what you are sorry for, because clearly saying what you did wrong makes your apology feel more real and sincere.

Multiple Choice
Louis knocked over Jayden’s project in class. Which of these is a timely apology?
“I’m really sorry I knocked over your project!” (right after it happened)
“Oh… sorry about that thing.” (two hours later)
“I guess you’ll get over it eventually.”
“Oops, my bad… whenever you’re ready.”
6
Multiple Choice
Maya made a joke that hurt her friend’s feelings. Which apology is sincere?
“Sorry you got upset.”
“Well, you shouldn’t be so sensitive.”
“I feel really bad for what I said. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“I’m sorry, but it was kind of funny.”
7
Multiple Choice
Ethan lost his friend’s pencil. Which apology is specific?
“Sorry for everything.”
“I’m sorry I lost your pencil. I should have been more careful.”
“Oops… my bad.”
“I hope you can forgive me for whatever I did.”

What Makes a Good Apology?
Acknowledge Your Part: This means owning up to your mistake. It shows you get why the other person is upset and that you are not ignoring their feelings.
Take Responsibility: This means admitting you made a mistake without blaming anyone else, showing that you are owning up to it.
Express Regret: This means showing you are sorry for what you did and that you truly regret hurting someone.
9
Multiple Choice
Jordan accidentally breaks a friend’s phone. Which apology owns up to the mistake?
“Don’t be mad, it’s not a big deal.”
“Well, it fell… so it’s kind of your problem too.”
“Oops… I guess phones break sometimes.”
“I’m really sorry I dropped your phone. It was my fault.”
10
Multiple Choice
Alex forgot to bring a group project to class. Which apology shows accountability?
“I forgot the project. That was my mistake, and I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
“I forgot it because you didn’t remind me.”
“Someone else must have taken it, not me.”
“It’s not my fault, the project is fine.”
11
Multiple Choice
Taylor said something mean to a classmate during lunch. Which apology shows real regret?
“I guess you shouldn’t have been so sensitive.”
“I’m really sorry for what I said. I didn’t mean to hurt you, and I feel bad about it.”
“Well, you said mean things too, so it’s fine.”
“It was just a joke, so don’t be mad.”
12
What Makes a Good Apology?
Show Empathy: This means showing you get how your actions hurt someone and that you care about their feelings.
Not Expecting Forgiveness: Say sorry without expecting them to forgive you right away. They might need time to think about it, and that’s okay.
Changed Behavior: An apology is better when you promise to do things differently. It shows you’re not just saying sorry but want to fix the problem for next time.
13
Multiple Choice
Sam made a joke that hurt Riley’s feelings. Which apology shows empathy?
“Sorry… I guess.”
“It was just a joke, don’t be so sensitive.”
“I get that my joke hurt you, and I’m really sorry.”
“Well, you laughed at other jokes, so it’s fine.”
14
Multiple Choice
Jordan accidentally spilled juice on Maya’s notebook. Which apology respects that Maya might need time?
“I’m really sorry I spilled your juice. I understand if you need time to be okay with it.”
“Oops, my bad! Forgive me now?”
“I spilled it, but it’s just a notebook. You’ll get over it.”
“Sorry… hurry up and forgive me already.”
15
Multiple Choice
Taylor interrupted their partner during a group project. Which apology shows they will change their behavior?
“Oops, I interrupted… whatever.”
“Sorry, but you talk too much too.”
“I guess I’ll try not to interrupt… but sometimes it’s hard.”
“I’m sorry for interrupting. I’ll make sure to wait my turn and listen better next time.”
16
What Should Not Be in an Apology?
The word "but..."
Using “but” usually sounds like you’re making excuses or blaming someone else. It can make your apology feel fake.
“I’m sorry but I was just joking.” vs
“I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. I didn’t mean to, and I’ll be more careful next time.”
