The Aztecs were fierce warriors. They seemed invincible to the neighboring tribes they conquered as they extended their empire.

The people of Tenochtitlan lived in fear. Their gods were ruthless and if angered would destroy the world as they had done several times before.

Great efforts were made to keep the gods happy. After a battle, prisoners of war were sacrificed as offerings to them.

In 1500, the water level in the lakes surrounding Tenochtitlan rose. Many died when flood-waters inundated the city.

The Aztecs believed the Spanish were god-like and couldn't be killed. Since it was useless to fight them, they were forced to placate the enemy.
