Yearbook 101 pt. 2

What is the theme?

• area of the yearbook connecting the front and back covers
• Outside of the yearbook which protects the printed pages
  
• A verbal statement and a visual look which tie all parts of the yearbook together.
  
• Listing of the pages containing the opening, sections, and index. The contents can appear on endsheet, title page or opening.

What is the colophon?

• A complete alphabetical listing of all the students, teachers, topics and events covered in the yearbook.
  
• The story.  Every Spread should contain a story, also called a copy block.
• Two facing or side-by-side pages in the yearbook such as 2 and 3, 4 and 5, 6 and 7, etc.
• A list of the technical printing information about the yearbook, including price, number of copies, colors, fonts, photography company and awards won by previous year’s book.  It appears at the end of in the index.
  

What is the first question you ask anyone you interview?

What is the number one complaint about all yearbooks?

• I hate it!

What is another major complaint about the yearbook nation-wide?

• It's too big!
• I don't like the cover.
• The designs are bad.
• I'm not in it.

What should your captions always have?

• Fact, figures and feelings?
• Fact, figures and emotions?
• Fun, personality and opinions.
• A history of the event.

What does the primary/first sentence of a caption do for the reader?

• Attention-getting word or phrase        relating to the action/reaction of the photo
• Reports the most important 5Ws & H & is written in present tense
• Provides details not obvious in the photo & written in past tense
• gives the reader meaningful information                & insights stated directly from or about subject

What is the last question you ask your subject before you have them sign your beat sheet?

• What's your number?
• Is there anything else you would like to add?
• How do you feel about __________ (insert topic here)
• How was your weekend?

Why is yearbook most important?

• Because it is an amazing representation of print journalism
• Because it provides a history of the school! 
• Because it can change lives!
• Because the yearbook staff are the coolest!
