One of America’s greatest writers was Mark Twain. He led a very interesting life. 
Childhood 
Mark Twain’s real name was Samuel Clemens. He was born in 1835. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which is on the Mississippi River. As a boy he loved watching the steamboats. 
Early jobs 
Early in life, Mark Twain trained to be a printer. He also wrote for his brother's newspaper. For a while he worked as a riverboat pilot. But when the Civil War started, the steamboats had to stop running. He moved out West to look for gold. While he was trying to find gold, he made money by writing stories. Soon, he became a full time writer.
