Text Structure-Compare/Contrast

While oranges and lemons are both citrus fruits that grow on trees, they are different colors and have very different tastes.
The author organizes the paragraph for the purpose of describing--

Apples and oranges are both fruits, which means that they have seeds inside of them. Each has skin, but the orange's skin is thick and easy to peel.  Apple's skin is thinner and do not peel easily. Oranges also contain more acid than apples, but both fruits grow on trees.

The cardinal and the cedar waxwing are two common birds. Both have crests on their heads. Both are common at bird feeders. But the birds have some differences. The male cardinal is a bright red, while the waxwing is brown.  The cedar waxwing often migrates from place to place. On the other hand, the cardinal stays in one place year after year.
The organization of this paragraph contributes to the author's main idea by--

• comparing how the cardinal and cedar waxwing look and how they live.

On both Halloween and Easter you get candy, but the candy looks very different. Easter candy is usually wrapped in bright colors. On the other hand, Halloween candy is often black and orange or it may have monsters and gobblins on the wrappers. 
The main purpose of this paragraph is to--

• give examples of how candy varies between Halloween and Easter.
• suggest that Easter candy is better than Halloween candy.
• highlight the importance of eating candy regardless of the holdiay. 

Next time you are thirsty, try drinking a glass of water instead of a soda. Although both will quench your thirst, soda is full of sugar and chemicals. Water, on the other hand, is a much healthier choice. Water helps your digestive system to function properly and keeps your immune system strong so you won't get sick.
