Phases, Eclipses and Tide - Earth's Moon

The phases of the moon you see depends on

• Where you are on Earth's surface
• How much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth
• How much of the moon's surface is lit by the sun
• Whether or not an eclipse is occuring

From the NEW MOON phase to the FULL MOON phase, you see 

• An increasing amount of the lit side of the moon
• A decreasing amount of the lit side of the moon
• The same amount of the lit side of the moon
• More of the lit side, then less of the lit side of the moon

During what phase can a lunar eclipse occur?

• New moon
• First quarter
• Waxing gibbous
• Full Moon

Because the moon rotates once for each revolution around the Earth,

• You never see the far side of the moon
