Being Assertive

Someone cuts in front of you in a line.

• Assume they didn't know you were in line; gently explain that you were waiting before them

• Say nothing, but glare at them and "accidentally" bump into them

• Say nothing and do nothing

• Yell at them and tell them that they pushed in the line. Report it to a teacher

Someone at school is making inappropriate jokes about someone or something.

• Say nothing and just pretend that you didn't hear them

• Laugh and join in on the jokes so they don't start laughing at you

• Tell the person that their jokes are inappropriate and not funny. Then remove yourself from the situation

You are have organised to meet with someone at 10:00, but they get there a bit later. You would say

• That they are really rude for being so late and you do not like being kept waiting

• Say nothing. It is better to avoid conflict all of the time

• Ask them why they were late and if everything is okay

• if they are not there on time, just leave and say nothing

A person in the group you are working in keeps distracting the other people in the group. What do you do

• Tell the teacher

• Ask them if they know what to do.. explain the task and give them a job in the group

• Yell and argue that they are not doing anything

• Ignore them and complete the group task by yourself

You are playing a team-building exercise. One of your team members is finding the exercise very difficult. What do you do?

• Yell at them and tell them what to do

• Give up on the game and walk away because you weren't going to win anyway

• While you wait in line, encourage them and give some pointers that might help them

• Tell them they aren't any good and ask to change teams.

You are reading a book that a friend needs as well. What do you do?

• Give them the book straight away, even though you miss out

• Yell at them for being selfish and that you are using it at the moment

• Let them know that they can have the book as soon as you are finished with it.

• ignore them and hope they go away

A person in your group is asked to pack the books away. They are getting distracted by talking to the person next to them. You should

• Order them that they need to hurry up

• Get out from your desk and pack it up for them

• Tell the teacher

• Politely ask them to finish their conversation later

You see a heap of rubbish scattered in the area that you eat. What do you do

• Pick it up alone

• Tell the teacher that it was left messy

You are standing in the tuckshop line and another student pushes in front of you. What do you do?

• Remind them that there is a line and let know that people have been waiting
